Coming to Wine Country: Bacon & Barrels

A brand-new Los Olivos weekend is all about strips and sips.

SALTY AND SWEET: The time-honored pairing of salty and sweet usually gets play in all of the usual ways. Oh, trail mix is a biggie -- think of the chocolates and almonds -- as is blue cheese and grapes. But a more unusual one set to hit big? Bacon and wine. One typically occupies the start of the day, and one the later hours, but a new Los Olivos festival is set to have the meat and the libation meet in the middle. It's called Bacon & Barrels and it will make its first-ever bow from Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21 in the pretty Santa Ynez wine country village.

TICKETS TO GO ON SALE: That's a ways off, but the chance to grab an admission is not. The on-sale date is April 1.

PLATES AND GLASSES: "(T)he best chefs of the Central Coast" will gather in the town to make all sorts of bacon-based entrees and appetizers and snacks. A three-course bacon dinner opens up the festivities on July 19. And to sip? Well, wines will take the forefront, as one might expect given the location, but craft brews and spirits like bourbons will also be paired with the salty meaty yum.

LOVELY LOS OLIVOS: Even if your third week in July is too busy for bacon and bourbon, you should still plan a day soon in the town named for the olive. Our opinion? When one dreams of the perfectly petite but funky wine country town, complete with tasting rooms, some excellent eateries, and a good stay-over spot or two, they're dreaming of Los Olivos. It comes as close to the standard as towns can get, and that's pretty much fact.
