ConstructionWatch: Waterworld Plus Parking On Ninth

It's note entirely clear if Downtown even needs or wants more new rental buildings, but 717 Ninth continues to rise up off its big hunk of a parking garage. Don't you look just like cousin 1100 Wilshire, 717? According to the Downtown News, the folks at Meruelo Maddux Properties, who got a $84 million construction loan back in August (just in time), once said that this 35-story residential tower and its shimmering glass would be a "aquatic metaphor" for the city. Meanwhile, the News notes construction on the 214-unit waterworld will be done by September 2009, while there are also plans for retail and a restaurant (a seafood joint, natch). And in the last shot: Development Concerto, the other of the Ninth Street-area twins. Photos: Dan Caroselli
