Del Mar Thoroughbred Club: Off-the-Track Fun

A food truck gathering, live music, and more dot the calendar.

THE PONIES FLYING... down the track near the ocean in Del Mar can rightly consume much of our focus and attention, and with good reason. After all, fast horses running at one of the world's most renowned and historic venues are a sight to behold, and that the season in which they run isn't all that long makes every race a thrilling showdown. But when the stars of the show trot back to the paddock, what else is going on around the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which just kicked off its Summer Meet on Friday, July 15? In a word, plenty, and the schedule is such that seeing some manes a-flyin' and hearing some live music and sipping a foamy 'n fancy beer is all doable, if you plan ahead. So start your planning, for happenings like...

THE GOURMET FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL, which rolls — or parks, rather — on Saturday, July 23 near the famous track. Some 40 trucks are expected, so get ready to chow down on tacos, burgers, ice cream goodies, and more. Family Weekends in the infield are also revving up, and all of the to-dos, from the inflatable games to the face painting, is free. And Daybreak at Del Mar is all about the morning arrival, the better to take in the early-in-the-day workouts (and a little breakfast, too). Cold War Kids, Reggae Fest with Ziggy Marley, and Fitz and the Tantrums bring the tunes in July, with more to come in August. Plus: Classic Cars, a taco-liciolus event, and Donuts Day, a local favorite, are on the calendar. So for sure, admire all of that on-the-saddle action, but if you're doing Del Mar, make a day of it. Beforehand, though, choose what day, or days, that'll be.
