Desert Fare: Palm Springs Restaurant Week

Sup around the resorts and eateries that dot the desert, stylishly.

IN SEARCH OF SHADE: While the concept of "shade" gets a lot of play online -- who's sending it and who's receiving it -- it takes on a wholly different meaning around the desert resort cities in June. For summer's official kick-off month is a mite warm around Palm Springs and Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage, you might have heard. That's where all of those wonderful pools come into play, and the misters that line outdoor bars and fire pit areas. As for the daytime? It's all about shade, as in the kind cast by an umbrella or an oasis of palms. But if you happen to be around Palm Springs in early June, or one of the surrounding burgs, you can pair some of that delightful shade-seeking with dining deals galore. For Greater Palm Springs Restaurant Week is all about showing off some of the region's most varied vittles, from diner-hearty eats to top-notch gourmand fare. Not just showing off, of course, but showing off at a discount, thanks to an array of prix fixe, multi-course menus. The 2016 dates are...

FRIDAY, JUNE 3 THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 12... and "(o)ver 100 hotels, restaurants & attractions across the Greater Palm Springs area will participate." Ah yes, this isn't just an eat-out thing, but a stay awhile/play awhile thing, too. As for the restaurants on the roster? Johnny Costa's Ristorante, Arnold Palmer's Restaurant, The Nest, Wally's Desert Turtle, and several more spots are part of the June nosh-about. As for finding some sweet shade after an ultra-sunny afternoon? Yep, you can retreat indoors, or find an umbrella on a patio at select spots. As for the P.S. area hosting its annual Restaurant Week just days before the start of summer? We've said it before: It rocks. For sure, winter and spring provide a flurry of fun times around the Coachella Valley, from Modernism Week to the mondo music festivals, but summer's slow down and its shade-seeking ways are primo. Oh yes, and all of those warm-weather, summer-style deals are a sweet as a tropical drink sipped poolside, for sure.
