Dodgers Drop Two Of Three To The Pirates

Yasiel Puig and Andre Ethier had five of seven hits for the Dodgers

The Dodgers lost on Sunday to the Pirates in a 6-3 game. The Father’s Day failure knocked the Dodgers 10 games under .500 and 7.5 back in the NL West.

Zach Greinke pitched five innings giving up eight hits, for five runs, with just three strikeouts. He had thrown 14 innings, allowing just six hits and two runs in last two starts.

Greinke gave up back-to-back singles to start the game, and a double to Garrett Jones put the Dodgers down 2-0 in the first inning. The Dodgers fought back with Tim Federowicz and Andre Ethier both hitting RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, but the game was not tied for long.

In the fifth inning, Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer off of Greinke that proved to be too much for the Dodgers to overcome in the 6-3 loss.

Greinke’s season record is now 2-3 and giving up four runs in five innings on Sunday jacks his ERA up to 4.22 from 3.68. Greinke has not been racking up the strikeouts in 2013, his 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings is his lowest mark since 2005 when he had 17 losses.

Sunday’s game had few bright spots, but Yasiel Puig, and Andre Ethier did combine for five of the Dodgers’ seven hits.

Puig continues to be a difficult out going 3-4 with three singles and a run scored. He is now hitting .479/.500/.771 with eight multi-hit games, and has reached base safely in 11 of 13 games played.

Andre Ethier also had a pair of RBI singles in four at bats. Ethier has shown signs of life in June, especially in Pittsburgh where he went 5-10 with three RBI and just one strikeout.

The Dodgers head to New York to face the Yankees for a two-game series, after dropping two of three to the Pirates. The Yankees have also suffered a ton of injuries in 2013, but are still seven games over .500 and three games back in the very competitive AL East.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will be on the mound Tuesday against Phil Hughes.
