Dream House: Live in a Castle

Rare opening in coveted Pasadena landmark.

We may be in a housing market slump at the moment, but some neighborhoods never lose their cache. Castle Green is such a place. Literally a castle, the Green is seven stories of Moorish Colonial and Spanish architecture with a primo seat next to Central Park in Old Pasadena. Born in 1899 as an elite resort whose guest list has included presidents, the luxurious hotel is one of Pasadena's most prized architectural landmarks. Sold in 1924, it's now used mostly for events and film shoots, and houses 50 permanent, individually owned units.

Residence opportunities here are few and coveted, but one has just opened up for a relatively not-too-horrifying $715,000 (in a castle!). Imagine having your living room in a turret. Nooks, crannies and old-world details bring the charm, while modern appliances and loads of light deliver create a fresh, comfortable retreat. And the views are to die -- inside and out on the balcony.

We could go on and on, but we're too busy speed-dialing mortgage brokers.
