Earth Day in Santa Barbara

PLANET PARTY: Santa Barbara's role in the founding of Earth Day is one the city takes pretty seriously. So seriously that initiatives like Santa Barbara Car Free are routinely launched, and not just for the duration of Earth Day Week in April. But come that particular week in April, the city does indeed go all out, hosting not just a two-day festival but other satellite events as well.

2011 DETAILS: The main festival is free, and it is happening at Alameda Park on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17. There's a whole section devoted to cycling -- it's called Bike World -- and the Children's Enchanted Forest. And a whole Harvest to Home area, which puts the emphasis on gardening topics. (Think vermiculture, or worms -- yay worms!). In short, it is a most robust Earth Day celebration, with truly a bit of something for everyone. Oh yes, and let's not forget the cinephiles out there; the Green Shorts Film Festival rolls at the Lobero on Thursday, April 14.
