Mardi Gras Meals: Fat Tuesday is Tuesday, February 16th, and a handful of restaurants around Los Angeles have stocked up on powdered sugar for the beignets.
Dominick's and Little Dom's: The Beverly Boulevard restaurant, as well as its Los Feliz cousin, have Red Beans & Rice on the stove, as well as Jambalaya, Cochon de Lait Po Boys, and Muffaletas. Oh yes, savory, stuffed muffaleta-y goodness. And mini king cakes, a New Orleans must-eat. Those are $4, Crayfish Pie is $5, and Jambalaya is $6.
Harold & Belle's: We were excited when this landmark restaurant turned 40 back in the fall, complete with a huge parking lot party. Our must-try pick then? Crawfish Étouffée. Like The Gumbo Pot and New Orleans Cajun Cafe, Harold & Belle's serves classic French Quarter-ready cuisine all year long, but enjoying it on Mardi Gras is wonderful.
Rush Street: To be fair, the Fat Tuesday emphasis at the Culver City hangout is more on the libations of the Louisiana than the dishes. The party's on from 7PM through 2AM, and Hurricanes, Mint Juleps, and Alabama Slammers will be on the pour. Plus beads. So many beads. You're picturing yourself with 15 or 20 strands on now, yes?
The Gumbo Pot: This Farmers Market favorite is all about New Orleans all year through. On the menu: Gumbo Ya Ya, Cajun Meatloaf, and Fresh Boiled Crawfish. Plus truly special beignets. If you want to eat at The Gumbo Pot on Mardi Gras, know that there will be quite the queue come nightfall. Can you hit it at 3 or 4 in the afternoon?
New Orleans Cajun Cafe: You're near Hermosa Beach, and you're craving Jambalaya and accordion-driven zydeco. Make for this eatery, which is typically closed on a Tuesday but is staying open from 5-10PM to celebrate the holiday.
