Oftentimes a move in a book signals big changes for the characters. Perhaps they're leaving a home they've always known, or an office they've always worked at, and they have to make a new start in a fresh location.
What are the big changes, then, when thousands of books, hundreds of authors, and one major lit-lovely festival packs up the truck and makes for different locale? We'll guess that the transformations will be subtler than one might think. The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is indeed unfurling at USC on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, but all the things that fans came to know and enjoy at its former UCLA location will be present.
Like, authors. Lots of authors. Nearly a small city of scribes. People like T.C. Boyle, Pico Iyer, Michael Connelly, Alison Arngrim, and Jamie Lee Curtis will be reading and signing and saying hi to the fans.
The always anticipated panels and stages are also on the schedule; Sunday will see several panels devoted to the intricacies of mystery plots and character, while Saturday has several fiction panels, including a session devoted to Writing the Absurd.
Many booksellers and companies will also be on the grounds, as usual, purveying in all sorts of tomes and pamphlets and paperbacks, many at a discount.
Attendance is free, like at UCLA, and, like at UCLA, some events will be ticketed, so get your info ahead of time.
