Free: Learn Dance at the Segerstrom

Join Alvin Ailey artists in Costa Mesa and learn a few riveting routines.

MOVE, BREATHE, EXPRESS: National Dance Day may still be a few months away, but getting outside and shaking it, en masse, is still happily possible if you just look in the right direction. As of early April 2016 that direction is very much about Costa Mesa, and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which is hosting a "Revelation Celebration!" on Sunday, April 3. The daytime activity is free, and visitors are invited to stop by and join in, even if they're not due to see a show at the center that day. At the teaching lead of the alfresco, full-of-joy performance? Dancers from The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The event welcomes "all ages and levels of experience," so even if you've never officially tapped a toe or swung a hip or swirled your arms, you are most welcome to give some glorious movement a go.

THE SPIRIT CHORALE... opens the late-morning start off at 11 a.m., and a warm-up follows at fifteen after the hour. (Making sure those muscles are ready to spring and contract and respond, without strain, is essential.) Two groups, Group A and Group B, will learn two different routines -- "Wade in the Water" and "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel" -- in tandem, and then everyone'll merrily merge to practice, and excel at, "Rocka My Soul." Does the whole event end with the trio of pieces being performed by all? Indeed it does, which will make a fine and spirited sight just a few minutes ahead of 1 o'clock.

"DISCOVER AILEY": If you'd like more goodness from the lauded dance troupe, check out "Discover Ailey," which leaps and twirls at the Segerstrom on Wednesday, April 6. One lovely bonus? Every seat is just $29, quite the amazing price for an amazing evening of expression.
