Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Scooter Rider, Returns to Scene to Collect Bumper

A 28-year-old man riding a "Vespa-type" scooter in Huntington Park this morning was struck and killed by a hit-and run motorist who returned to the crash scene to retrieve his front bumper, where he was taken into custody by police.

Details are still sketchy, the crash occurred a little before 2 a.m. in the 7000 block of Alameda Street, where the 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, said Huntington Park police Lt. Al Martinez said.

"The suspect initially fled the scene, but later returned because he left his front bumper, which contained his license plate (numbers)," Martinez said.

The suspect, a 30-year-old resident of Hawthorne, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run, felony drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter, he said.
