Hollywood with a Side of Eek

A scavenger hunt takes on Tinseltown's creepiest tales.

Extreme scavenger hunts get trendy and then get tiresome, but the hunt that involves a lot of localness, a lot of lore, and a healthy dose of Halloween creepy-creepy trucks on strong, year after year.

The Haunted Hollywood Hunt is a perfect example. The Out of the Box-produced hunt marks its fifth year in 2011, and its growing longevity is thanks to its mix of the macabre and mirthful and movie-star-ish legend. Hardly anyone can resist a potent stew of those three things, and certainly not the thousands of cinephiles 'round these parts.

The annual hunts kick off on Saturday, Oct. 8; it will run for several more night through the end of the month. The Roosevelt and the Knickerbocker play starring roles -- no surprise there, if you know your Hollywood and you know your ghosts -- and a lot of theaters will make cameos as well. Plus "secret locations." We love a good secret location.

You don't need to be much of a ghost hunter or scavenger pro to join in. Having some friends on the event, and having a good sense of humor, will go a long way. Oh, and comfortable shoes. Oh, and a costume, if you're up for it.

Price is $25.

What's your most haunted Hollywood spot? If you had to choose? There's something so atmospheric about standing outside Miceli's right at twilight, in our opinion. Perhaps it was that glass of chianti that makes us all aglow, or maybe there's a film phantom residing in the area. We'll vote both.
