There will be many Memorial Day observances in and around Southern California. Here are a few local traditions and meaningful commemorations:
The Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade: The 2010 parade was canceled, but it is back this year on Monday, May 30. There will also be a festival at Quimby Park following the procession. Sherman Way and Owensmouth is the starting pointing, and the time to be there is 11 a.m.
The 122nd Annual Memorial Day Program: It's a tradition at the Los Angeles National Cemetery, and once again there will be a keynote speaker (Maj. General John T. Crowe). David James Elliott of "JAG" is also scheduled to be in attendance. The program starts at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30.
Queen Mary: The ocean-liner now forever-docked in Long Beach played a pivotal role in World War II -- you might have known her as "The Grey Ghost" -- so it is most fitting that the ship waives Memorial Day admission for veterans each year. Active military may also get in free. Monday, May 30
Memorial Day Flower Drop: About 3,000 carnations will float down from a B-25 Mitchell at the Palm Springs Air Museum. That's happening at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 30, but arrive earlier for kid activities and other to-dos. You can also leave with a flower as a memento.
