Christopher Hawthorne, the Los Angeles Times architecture critic, makes the case for Measure R, the half-cent sales tax increase that would increase transit and build better roads. Hawthorne says new train lines will lead to more nabes like Pasadena's Gold Line-adjacent Colorado Boulevard (pictured right), which brims with life. Hawthorne says the mixed-use structures that typically rise around subway and train stations are often less-than-inspiring but nonetheless create livable cities and instill civic pride.
