Jim Morrison, one of the seminal rock superstars and certainly one of our city's most well-known bards, would have turned 65 on Monday, December 8 (Morrison passed away in Paris in 1971 at the age of 27). Barney's Beanery, where the lead singer of The Doors famously would hold court, is honoring the day with a shindig celebrating Mr. Mojo Rising, and the celebs are turning out.
Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger, keyboardist and guitarist for The Doors respectively, are scheduled to be at the bash, as will rock station 95.5 KLOS (the station is broadcasting live from the bar). We wouldn't be half-surprised to see other industry luminaries put in an appearance, or at least people who loved/partied with/listened to The Doors during their hit-laden, myth-shrouded ascent to music royalty in the late 1960s.
KLOS is the place for tickets, so good luck; if you don't win you can always tune in and listen live. And even if you weren't around, or living in Los Angeles, or didn't date a member of The Doors, but still manage to nab some tix, be sure to don your most Laurel Canyon-ish outfit -- the chunky heels, the leather pants, the scarves -- and make for Barney's. The bar hasn't changed all that much since Jim drank there, and songs like "Light My Fire" and "LA Woman" aren't merely golden oldies.
And LA? People are strange, still, and that's a great thing.
