If you think that the baseball stadium is a hallowed ground that should not be tampered with, it's time to look away. Right now Dodger Stadium has a hockey rink in the infield, a beach volleyball court in the outfield, and a roller rink covering home plate.
But, why?! Well, the Los Angeles Kings are taking their talents from the Staples Center to Dodger Stadium this Saturday. While most of the country is frozen over, the Kings will be facing off against the Anaheim Ducks at Chavez Ravine, in the Southern California heat.
It is an exciting event, but there has been some concern about how the ice conditions will affect the game. The NHL started playing games outdoors with the Winter Classic, which used to take place exclusively on the East Coast -- and allowed for much more favorable skating conditions.
In 2014 they have expanded it due to popularity, and are calling it the Stadium Series. Dodger Stadium, Yankee Stadium, and Soldier Field (home of the Chicago Bears football team) are all hosting the event this year.
On New Year's Day, the Detroit Red Wings kicked off the series against the Toronto Maple Leaves at the University of Michigan football stadium. Over 100,000 fans attended the game in sub-zero temperatures -- a much different scene than what is anticipated in LA this weekend.
This is the second time in the past year that Dodger Stadium has been transformed away from the baseball diamond. While the Dodgers were on a roadtrip in August, the stadium hosted a duo of soccer matches featuring the LA Galaxy and Real Madrid.
The soccer matchers faded Dodger Stadium's grass to brown, prompting complaints from fans about what the field should be used for. This time around the griping will be kept to a minimum as the field should have plenty of time to recover before the start of the 2014 season.
