Belasco to Host LA Beard and Mustache Competition

Is the lower part of your face especially fine? Show it off, furry fellow.

Movember, that annual fundraiser where men grow mustaches* for a month, may be a long time off but that certainly doesn't mean men aren't tending to the hair located on the lower parts of their faces.

Beard and mustache stylings are a year-round calling for plenty of stylish gentlemen. And it is a fact that sometimes stylish gentlemen like to socialize and raise a pint to all matters hirsute and hairy and help out others in the process, regardless of time of  year. And our own local LA Beard and Mustache Club will be doing just that on Sunday, June 24 at The Belasco downtown.

Yep, we're talking about the 2012 LA Beard and Mustache Competition, and, like Movember, there's spirit behind the 'stache: The competition will raise funds for the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House.

Want to compete? Price is $25. Want to watch and be inspired? Price is $15.

Did you pick compete just then? Then let's eyeball the categories and see where your own special face scruff might fit. There's the Business Beard, the Groomed Beard, and the Full Beard Natural. There are Styled and Natural Mustaches. Goatees, Sideburns/Mutton Chops, and Freestyle get the love, too. And here's our favorite grouping: Whiskerina, which is the ladies' category. Want to make a beard out of something that's not beard and then wear it? You can, sisters, you can. Personally, we might go Popsicle sticks or Day-Glo ribbons.

Competitors, there is no in-person registration that day so get to the site by June 22 to get all the details.

Oh, and it is a 21+ event, so if you're 19 and working on your beardage, you'll have to practice for a few years more, young apprentice. Facial  hair is an art that takes time and perservance, after all, and loads of patience. A little pomade or 'stache wax never hurts, either.

(*Update: Movember is just about the 'stache, not the full facial hair as was previously stated. So prepare to grow your mustaches come November, gentlemen! Now, who is going to start a beard-growing fundraiser month? Anyone? What bold, beard-loving organization will step up to the plate and take over February? Making it Bearduary?)
