LA County Sheriff's Newest Crime Fighting Vehicle: The Mini

BMW will lease 17 electric MINI Coopers to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for $10 per month per car, under a testing program that got a green light today from the Board of Supervisors.

The MINI E model is currently only available to drivers in the U.S. as part of a field trial.

Drivers of the 100-percent electric cars are required to meet a list of conditions set by BMW and pay a market lease rate of $850 per month, but the automaker is offering the reduced rate to the sheriff's department in exchange for deputies' feedback.

Charging stations for the sedans will be installed at sheriff's facilities by MINI USA, which will also handle all vehicle maintenance and repairs.

The reduced lease rate constitutes a gift to the county, which the board authorized as the cars support the county's strategic goal of promoting environmental responsibility.
