Here's an interesting adaptive re-use project going on in the Long Beach East Village Arts District, a development by local firm Studio 111 that has a bit of music history.
According to Alan Pullman, AIA, principal of the firm, this is an adaptive re-use of three commercial buildings at Fourth and Linden streets into nine for-sale office lofts. All the buildings formerly housed SST Records, founded by Greg Ginn of legendary punk band Black Flag.
Writes Pullmann: "The project carves a new paseo through the existing brick and wood buildings, linking individual offices with a parking area in the back of the property and a shared communal courtyard located along Fourth Street. New facades restore portions of the existing historic architecture...The development team is a partnership of Long Beach developers responsible for the redevelopment of Long Beach projects such as the Art Theater and The Ebell Club, and architecture firm Studio One Eleven. The older kids among us will get the Black Flag reference, actually that's mostly what we care about, so we asked some more questions about the connection. Writes Pullman: "Ginn sold us the building, but I’m not sure he ever lived there – it was mostly a place for band practices and record distribution, and Greg even used part of it as a cat rescue compound (I guess he’s really into helping cats). Lots of other bands used it for practice too, including KORN, so it has a cool history." Aw, and he's a cat lover. The project will be done in May.
