Major Music

A roundup of big names and big sounds hitting LA stages this week.

Alanis Morisette
Hard to believe it's been more than 10 years since Alanis basically conquered the music world overnight with 'Jagged Little Pill.' Since then she found herself in India, played God in a Kevin Smith flick and has had a series of sporadic hits, though none reaching 'Pill' proportions. Fans of fearsome women who rock get two chances to see Morisette this week at the Orpheum. She'll sing tracks from new album 'Flavors of Entanglement,' and no doubt a few familiar favorites.

Jessica Simpson
Given that Simpson's love life is practically daily bread for tabloids, it's easy to forget she actually has a singing career. She does, and she'll prove it in Highland this Thursday. Skeptics will note her latest record, 'Do You Know,' got a respectable three out of five stars in Rolling Stone's review.

Joe Satriani with Mountain featuring Leslie West and Corky Laing
Who doesn't think of standing on a rock in the desert, wind whipping through your hair while you riff like a guitar god when you think of Satriani's 'Summer Song'? Joe doesn't actually have any hair, but he brings his bad-ass baldness and mad string skills to the Wiltern this Thursday.

Hanson -- The Walk Around the World Tour
We're still reeling at the fact that the pubescent 'MMMBop' brothers are all grown up (married with kids!). Brother Taylor says their music's grown up, too, telling Rolling Stone "We're not a boy band... we like harder stuff." When we get over how old we feel, we might just have to see for ourselves.

America
The '70s folksters definitely hipped up their game with 2007's 'Here and Now.' Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, James Iha and Fountains of Wayne all lent their cool hands. Expect a mix of new and old favorites like 'A Horse With No Name' and 'You Can Do Magic.'
