Mammoth Lakes Film Festival

Return to "Innerspace" and see a bevy of fresh shorts.

MOVIES IN THE MOUNTAINS... can mean a few things, but the phrases does summon some friends gathering in a den, preferably one with a fireplace and a television, to wind down after a day on the slopes. Whether those movies are set in the mountains (as so many are), or take inspiration from true-life mountain tales, or are simply easy brain candy after a tiring day of schussing is up to the group. But mountain movies extend beyond the wintertime den, at least up in the Sierra Nevada resort known for its cold-weather ski scene. We speak of the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival, a five-day, 50-film cinegathering that happens just when the slope scene is giving way to bikes and hikes. Indeed, it all happens over Memorial Day Weekend, meaning the 2016 party is nearly here. The dates are...

MAY 25 THROUGH 29, and one of the centerpieces of the run is an '80s charmer with a sweet sci-fi bent: "Innerspace" with Martin Short, Meg Ryan, and Dennis Quaid. Mr. Joe Dante, the inspired director of the 1987 comedy, will call upon the festival for a screening and Q&A, and to accept the Sierra Spirit Award. A host of foreign films are on the slate, such as "Last Summer" from Italy and "Myrtle Beach" from Canada, and a Saturday morning presentation of indie animation should lend some zany levity to the proceedings. As for other, outside-of-the-cinema to-dos in the area? Well, there's a big one of Memorial Day Weekend, which will see open slopes up the mountain: The Ski/Bike/Golf Challenge, which involves participants engaging in all three things over the course of a day. So enjoy some movies, and some outdoors, over the cusp-iest weekend of the year 'round Mammoth. And isn't cinema, but nature, kind of cusp-y? Always on the edge of change and transformation? Deep thoughts for your drive up or down Highway 395.
