Mermaid Month at Ventura Harbor Village

A host of activities related to the sea-based superstars are popping up around the area.

IF YOU'VE EVER HOPPED ONTO A BOAT... at Ventura Harbor, you likely kept your peepers peeled for a whole caboodle of sealife and ocean-close birds. That could mean keeping a watch for gulls, yes, or pelicans, or those barky, curious sea lions and seals. If you went out further into Santa Barbara Channel you might spy a whale, or even, on occasion, a shark. But have you met a mermaid while strolling in and around the shop-lined village? We won't make that call — perhaps you are well acquainted with the mermaid community — but many landlubbers haven't yet met a tail-rocking straight-from-a-storybook mermaid or merman. That's changing at the waterside spot thanks to March Mermaid Madness, a multi-week happening around Ventura Harbor Village. There are...

MEET-UPS WITH MERMAIDS, and mermaid-related crafts (think "...jellyfish with upcycled water bottles") and a fin-fun parade. Make sure that you're there on the day of the to-do you want to join — check the Saturdays on the schedule, which possess most of the mermaid-merry happenings — but also keep in mind that the theme will extend to area businesses beyond the weekends. That means you could purchase a swimsuit that's $50+ and receive a mermaid candle at Ventura Swimwear or find a Mystical Mermaid Dole Whip at Coastal Cone. A number of restaurants, clothing stores, and art groups are involved with the enchanted, tail-terrific event, so peruse the whole list, check out any specific dates that might be listed, and then dive in the Pacific and swim for Ventura Harbor Village. (That is, of course, if you're not heading to the attraction via land and roads; we would not want to assume.)
