“Million Dollar” Ghosts

"Scrooge" plays at a historic venue. Spooky fun.

Our first thought when we learned that the LA Conservancy is going to screen the 1970 "Scrooge" at the Million Dollar Theater on Sunday, Dec. 5 was exactly this:

"Albert Finney!!!"

Complete with a trio of exclamation points. You probably had a Finney-esque moment, too, we imagine; it is almost impossible not to, once you get to thinking of his square jaw and twinkle of eye and booming tenor.

Our second thought, however, was about the ghosts. Specifically, the spirits that reportedly call the 92-year-old venue home -- perhaps you attended that recent ghost hunt -- and the famous spirits on the screen. You may know them better as the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, and let us not forget a certain Jacob Marley, who arrives early in the film to deliver a very important, if chain-jangly, message to one Ebenezer Scrooge.

The Ghost of Christmas Present is of course pictured above. We've always admired his holly hat, a look that some fashionista must be bold enough to try this year. Takers?

And a final question: What will the Million Dollar wraiths think of the cinematic spirits up on the screen? We can only imagine they'll welcome the kindred spirits. And we wouldn't be surprised if the theater's own ghosts had an "Albert Finney!!!" moment, too. Understandable. Expected. Totally.

This is a 2 p.m. matinee; an adult ticket is $10.
