NBC4’s The Challenge Features Heroes in the Community

NBC4's The Challenge, the station's live sports show hosted by Sports Anchor Fred Roggin, is in its 13th season and airs every week immediately following Sunday Night Football. 

The Challenge also features a local "Hero of the Night" each week during the program to salute the many men and women across Southern California who serve our community.

The first hero of the season on September 9 is Anaheim Fire Chief Randy Bruegman with a decorated career spanning 40 years, including as chief for 27 years.  Watch here to meet Chief Bruegman's and learn about his impressive career.

On September 16, Deputies Melvin Castro and Omar Sanchez from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were heroes of the night thanks to their heroic efforts to save a toddler who was choking.  Watch their story here.

We saluted Deputy David Solis from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department on September 23 who was shot several times while on duty and recovered to talk about it. He joined The Challenge, watch him here.

Chief Petty Officer Raymond Marquez from the United State Navy was featured on The Challenge on September 30 for this week's Hero of the Night. Chief Petty Officer Marquez has served for more than 17 years and has been deployed overseeas several times.  Watch the segment to meet him and his family here.

October 7 Hero of the Week is Pasadena Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Frieders who has spent decades serving his community. Meet him on Sunday's The Challenge right here.

On October 14, The Challenge Hero of the Night is Manhattan Beach Police Officer Chad Swanson, who earned the Lifesaving Award for responding to a scene while off-duty at the Las Vegas mass shooting.  Watch Officer Swanson here.

The Challenge Hero of the Night on October 21, U.S. Army Colonel Donald Blue, has been deployed into battle five times, and a 25 year member of the LAPD. Watch him on The Challenge here.

On October 28, the Hero of the Night was Flight Nurse Melanie Munns from the San Bernardino County Police and Fire Department and a Captain in the Air Force Reserve.  Be sure to watch her on the show.

Corporal Trevor Benson was Hero of the Night on November 4. As a Corporal for the Azusa Police Department, Benson gives his time to the Azusa Neighborhood Homework House, a non-profit serving the youth of his community. Meet Corporal Benson here.

On November 18, 2018, three heroes from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Marine Enforcement Unit were recognized on The Challenge, including Corporal Travis Vessells and Deputies William Poe and Brian Weck. The trio patrol California's waters to save lives, investigate accidents and bust those operating under the influence. Meet the group here

Captain Robert Sepulveda from the Pasadena Fire Department and Task Force #4 just returned from leading a search and rescue task force mission in the fire-devastated city of Paradise, California. Chino Valley Firefighter Paramedic Ryan Pourhassanian is our Hero of the Night on December 9. As the lead coordinator for the area's heart safe program, heensures new defibrillators are dispersed throughout the community. Meet him here.

On December 16, Firefighter Paramedic Daniel Harris of the Los Angeles Fire Department instinctively acted to help save the life of a young girl while on vacation. For this and so much more, Daniel Harris is our Hero of the Night. Watch his story.

On December 23, we honored Pomona Police Officer Jeff Hayward who saved the life of a boy found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Watch the tale of his heroic rescue.

Long Beach Fire Battalion Chief Jim Underwood joined The Challenge on December 30 as this week's Hero of the Night.  Underwood led a task force to fight the Hill and Woolsey fires. Meet him and his family.
