Drop a scoop of ice cream into a cold glass of soda and your reaction is bound to match the above headline. Since July 20 is Iced Cream Soda Day, you should know where to find good versions. Hollywood is ground zero for ice cream floats in Los Angeles, featuring orange cream and root beer floats. On Fairfax, you’ll find floats with Scoops ice cream, Virgil’s draft root beer, Coke, and most famously, craft beer. One of the only places to find floats made with house-made ice cream is in Mid-City, where they sell black cherry floats with vanilla bean ice cream, or citrus vanilla floats with blood orange sorbet, lime sorbet, vanilla bean ice cream and cream soda. Finally, if you’re craving an old school float, sidle up to a South Pasadena soda fountain that resides along Route 66.
