Presidents Day at Autry, LACMA, the Huntington

Several museums around town are marking the day.

We're still thinking about getting the chance to meet George Washington -- and possibly enjoying free cherry pie -- over at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.

But there are several cultural and historical and presidential goings-on around Los Angeles, so we'll name a few here. You're home today? And you're looking for ways to honor the holiday, apart from errands and chores?

The Autry National Center is staying open -- nice -- and offering free admission for kids under the age of 9. There will be gold panning. This spot is a great choice for the holiday; after all, the settling of the country is one of the themes of the museum.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens are also staying open for the day. The gardens will also be staying open longer for the holiday. What to see? There are several American-themed artifacts in the library. Ask a library representative where to start.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is hosting a Target Free Holiday Monday. You may have heard that the Wilshire-based museum's big big big Renoir exhibit just opened, but that is a separate ticket. Still, you can wander the permanent pieces, and you should, if you haven't.
