Presidents Day: Cherry Pie and Free Admission

...the Nixon Library. When you stop to consider the handful of presidential libraries around the nation, we're fortunate to live within short driving distance of two, including the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda, which is waiving admission for Presidents Day. When we were last there the roses around the president's childhood home were in full bloom -- spectacular -- although we're suspecting that won't be the case this wet holiday Monday. Still, the museum is a fascinating look at a life, a career, and the political maelstroms of the latter half of the 20th century. Also, Ed Nixon, the president's younger brother, will be speaking at the museum at 2PM on Monday, February 16.

18001 Yorba Linda Boulevard, Yorba Linda.

Bonus: Several "presidents" will be on-hand during the Presidents Day celebrations. Have your photo taken with George Washington! And if you get to the museum early enough, cherry pie will be served. Mmm...

Also on Presidents Day, Target hosts another of its ongoing "Free Holiday Mondays" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Vanity Fair exhibit is still on -- though only for a few more weeks -- but we'd take in a permanent collection on this atmospheric day. Don't lost-in-thought movie characters always sit on marble benches inside great halls and stare at sculptures on stormy afternoons? Maybe just the movies we watch. Monday, February 16. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard. 323-857-6000
