Ryu, Dodgers Fall Behind Early, Lose 4-2

Ryu loses back-to-back starts for the first time in his Dodger career

After Friday night's two-hour, five-hit display between the Dodgers and Red Sox, at least the two teams managed to put some runs on the board, Saturday, The Dodgers went down 4-0 early and could only scrape together two runs in the 4-2 loss.

Hyun-Jin Ryu got roughed up in the first inning when he hit Shane Victorino, and gave up back-to-back singles to Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli for one run. Jonny Gomes then hit a three-run homer to left-center field, putting the Dodgers in a four-run hole before they even had a chance to bat.

For the next 4.2 innings, Ryu struck out seven and gave up just two hits, but it was too little too late, the damage was done and the Dodger bats could not come back. This was his third outing this season to last only five innings, and the first time of his career with back-to-back losses.

The Dodgers were held to three hits over 7.1 innings by Boston's Jon Lester. In the eighth inning they put together a small rally starting with a one-out walk to Carl Crawford by Lester. Junichi Tazawa was brought in as relief, giving up a single to Yasiel Puig and striking out Mark Ellis.

Boston brought in another reliever, Craig Breslow, and the first batter he faced, Adrian Gonzalez, hit a double to score Crawford and Puig to cut the deficit in half. Hanley Ramirez was walked to put two batters on with two outs for A.J. Ellis, but he struck out to end the inning and the Dodgers last scoring threat of the game.

In two games with Boston, the Dodgers have just eight hits and four runs combined. The loss is just their third in 17 games and fourth in the month of August where they are now 19-4.

On Sunday, the Dodgers send Chris Capuano to the mound with their streak of 17 undefeated series on the line against Jake Peavy.
