Suspected Coin Laundry Thief Netted Thousands of Dollars in Quarters: Police

The suspect has been stealing change from laundry machines at apartments in the Los Angeles area.

Additional felony counts were filed Thursday against a 55-year-old man who was out on bail on charges of breaking into coin laundry machines at a Cypress apartment complex when he allegedly did the same thing in a Fullerton apartment building.

Jerry Scott Reed is charged with six felony burglary counts, with sentencing enhancement allegations of committing an offense while out on bail, in connection with his alleged Fullerton crimes, in which he is accused of drilling into coin-operated laundry machines at the Sycamore Village apartments at 3301 Yorba Linda Blvd. to steal change on Nov. 15, Dec. 20, Dec. 26, Jan. 4, Jan. 7 and Jan. 9.

Last fall, Reed was charged with dozen counts of burglary for allegedly breaking into coin laundry machines at a Cypress apartment complex. Between April 16 and Sept. 25 of last year, Reed allegedly stole about $2,000 in quarters from the Casa Grande complex, Cypress police Sgt. Dean Pinvidic said.

He said last September that surveillance camera footage linked the defendant to a dozen crimes, but there were many more such burglaries in the laundry facilities.

He alleged that Reed went into the laundry rooms in the early morning and use a power drill to gain access to the coin boxes. Reed is accused of causing about $6,000 in damage to the washers and dryers. When police arrested Reed, he was carrying power tools and a sack full of about $160 in quarters, Pinvidic said.
