Sometimes a sign's message can stick with you. On a recent visit to the world's oldest trees -- they're here in California, up in the Inyo National Forest -- we saw a sign asking what was next for the trees.
It seems a bit funny, to ask what's next for something that's been around for a good long time, but it is a lesson our own changeable, forward-moving metropolis should ask itself, often. The people who oversee the Santa Monica Pier -- which itself has been around for a century -- are pausing to do just that on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the pier's first-ever open house. (Or would "Open Pier" be more apt? Anyone? Bueller? Okay then.)
"Want to change history? Share your ideas for the next hundred years..." reads the web site. If you're a frequent pier visitor, you likely have one or two notions on how things might go at one of SoCal's most iconic locations. Should the hours be different for the rides? Should the carousel have more events? Should there be more Skee Ball? (Obviously the last question is always a big yes.)
The day isn't all about taking the public's temperature, though. Music, to-dos, and free carousel rides -- fist pump! -- are part of the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event.
Mostly we like when the people behind something that's representative of our region pause to ask us what we think. Santa Monica Pier may be entering its second century, but that doesn't mean things at the pier are set in stone. Or, er, sand, wood, and Ferris wheel lights, rather.
