MOM'S DAY WEEKEND: We're in that special and sometimes stressful moment when we're firming up our special plans for Mother's Day Weekend. Maybe we made our brunch reservation weeks ago or maybe we've been hemming and hawing along the way, trying to think up the perfect and creative experience for our discerning mother. ("Discerning" is of course a compliment; it is good to have a mom who knows what she likes.) A lot of grown-up kids'll be taking their moms wine tasting or out for a stroll around spots like Santa Barbara and Solvang, we imagine, which is why our eye fell on this interesting deal. It's the Santa Ynez Valley Weekend Pass and it is good for Mother's Day Weekend 2012. That includes the Friday before and the Monday after, in fact, so good stuff.

Actually, there's a bevy of two-for-ones on the list, so see if your favorite local label is represented. And, hello, an olive oil tasting in Los Olivos -- that's kind of perfect and we don't know a mom, or, let's be honest, any foodie who wouldn't be on board. Regardless of whether you make it up over the holiday weekend or not, Santa Ynez Valley'll be up there, all soft hills and olive shops and wine tastings. That comforts our big city heart.
