Top Seaside Haunts and Insane Asylums

Halloween weekend's scariest spots in Ventura and Pomona.

If the thought of dying slowly in traffic to the mega WeHo Halloween Carnaval has you shivering under the sheets, indulge your creep-tooth at some of LA's more accessible areas. Windy roads and pounding surf are the perfect backdrop for Ventura's Seaside Haunt. One of two new attractions at the site, "Blood Beach Haunted Mansion" sounds like a sure scream with its 20 shock-filled rooms hovering over angry ocean cliffs. Aboard the "Mutiny to Purgatory," walk a zombie-infested ship and pray one of the mateys doesn't stow away with you on the car ride home.

Fans of TV's 'Dexter,' 'CSI' and severed limbs in general will chomp at the bit to descend the depths of Mangler's Asylum at Fearplex in Pomona. Rumors say it was built in the early 1900s to house the criminally insane, then shut down due to questionable practices and mass murder. Now it's been resurrected for your viewing terror. After you're discharged from the asylum, check in to Lanterman Manor, reported to be authentically haunted. According to the website's warning, it's rated "very frightening and intense."
