Michael Patrick King tells great stories -- we're assuming he'll be sharing a few of those during his appearance at the Writers Guild on Thursday, January 29 -- so it is no surprise that he himself has a great story. We read last year's New York Times profile of the hugely successful show runner with interest; it revealed, among other things, the struggle that Mr. King had in finding and obtaining work before a little juggernaut called "Sex and the City" rolled by.
Not to say his inability to land a gig has anything to do with talent -- as we all know here in LA, luck plays a bigger role in the proceedings than we'd all care to admit. But rather we're inspired by a man who just stuck it out, and stuck it out, and stuck it out, and then succeeded. Kind of like Carrie Bradshaw.
Ah yes, Ms. Bradshaw, the central character of the mega HBO hit. King penned many of the episodes detailing Carrie's exploits, and the movie as well, and can surely talk about the pressures of writing for a fictional character that millions of real women consider nearly a best friend. Whether he'll talk about the movie's sequel, or sizzling gossip from the set, or what the hardest/easiest episodes to write were remains to be seen.
He's being interviewed by Winnie Holzman, another favorite writer of ours (she worked on both "thirtysomething" and "My So-Called Life," so suffice it to say she grasps female voice as well), and the dish is sure to be deep.
