Shed Some Holiday Pounds While Surf Kayaking

If you're looking to shed some of those extra holiday pounds, consider a physically challenging adventure in the serene settings of Marina del Rey: Surf Kayaking.

L.A. County Dept. of Beaches and Harbors is offering Surf Kayaking lessons in the harbor. Outings begin with kayaking instruction and water safety. Participants get the opportunity to practice and enjoy the Marina’s calm water and various basins and then head out to the North Jetty where they can surf the waves aboard sit-on-top kayaks. Both groups are instructed by Los Angeles County Lifeguards.

Kayaking is open to anyone 10 years of age or older. Children under 10 must be accompanied by and adult (double kayaks will be available.) Swimming ability is strongly recommended (lifejackets are provided for safety, everyone must wear -- no exceptions.) Class size for the harbor group is limited to 15; the surf group is limited to 10 and must be recommended by one of the instructors or get approval from the Recreation Services Supervisor. Fees must be paid upon registration; credit cards accepted.

Items to bring to the outing: water, hat, snack and sunscreen in a ziplock baggie, and appropriate attire (e.g. shorts, t-shirt or wetsuit depending on the weather.) While on the kayak, you will be sitting on some water, so be prepared to get wet. Bring a change of clothes.
