Skating with the Kings

Hit the ice with some well-known hockey players downtown.

In the heat of a hockey game, when shoulders are bumping and sticks click as players tumble in for puck supremacy, pretty much the last place you want to be is down on the ice.

Certainly if you're decked out in a cute sweater and skirt and only want to perform some pirouettes. But heading out onto the ice with some hockey players when they're just looking to have a little fun, too? No puck involved? Now that's the way to skate with some world-class athletes.

People who purchase tickets to the Wednesday, Nov. 30 benefit at LA Live will be doing just that. It's the LA Kings Holiday Skating Party, which means that regular, recreational skaters will get a chance to spin with some of the hockey-shirted greats. A ticket is $80. If you're age 20 or under, your ticket is $45. The money goes to various Staples- and Kings-supported foundations. (Note the rink will only be open to benefit guests from 6 to 9 p.m.)

Also on the ice? The Ice Crew. Oh, and you get a ticket to the Dec. 8 LA Kings-Minnesota showdown.

Also? Cocktails and warming beverages. We'd skate first and then go the cocoa route, but that's just us. A surplus of recently consumed hot beverage does not do well with serious spinning. Our experience.

A few things to note. This'll all go down on the seasonal LA Live rink at Nokia Plaza (so there will be no barriers, a la a hockey game, nor will you get sent to the penalty box). LA Live says the rink is bigger this year, giving you more room for those figure eights.

If you're looking to hit the rink when the hockey players have vamoosed, it is now open and running through Jan. 5. We're not promising you your day on the ice will be totally hockey player-free; after all, the Kings play in the vicinity. We like to think of the guys wanting a little R&R-type skating following a heated, puck-flying-every-which-way battle. They probably do want that, right?
