Spirit Nods Announced

The indie awards head from the beach to downtown.

Of all the LA awards shows, the Independent Spirit Awards are the LA-awards-show-iest.

Well, we think anyway, but we're one of many on that topic. After all, this is the famous awards show that has long taken place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica a day or two before the Oscars (all those celebrities were often in town for the big show).

The scene: Stars dressed down, stylish-down, of course, sometimes even showing in things resembling flip-flops and fancy-pants sundresses.

Now the 2010 awards are headed for LA Live in honor of the show's 25th birthday. Will we still see casual flip-flops downtown? Even if so, the attendees will not be casual about the purpose of the day. That purpose is to salute the non-blockbuster-y films of the year, the stars, and the people that gave over a chunk of their lives to see those movies to fruition.

Even Sundance has vowed to return to its feistier, lower-budget roots in 2010 with the introduction of NEXT.

Taraji P. Henson and Matt Dillon did the nominee-announcing duties on Tuesday, December 1st. Getting the spotlight: "Precious," "(500) Days of Summer," and "The Last Station"; you can eye all the nominees here. Then see them. See as many as you can.

The awards show will be on Friday, March 5, 2010.
