Summer's Last (Hot) Gasp

The LA Times notices what we've all been noticing: we're schvitzing up a storm for late October. While other chilly people in more northern climes are snuggling into scarves and wrapping their hands around mugs of steamy hot toddy-like beverages, we've been collectively glistening/fanning our faces here in SoCal.

No real surprise, thanks to the Santa Anas kicking up this time of year. We've always viewed summer in LA as running from Fourth of July to Halloween (one can hardly claim the season starts in June, with all that damp-grey gloom).

Since Halloween is almost here, and the summer temps are sure to wrap up quickly, we've got three places we'd go to savor this last pinch of powerful heat:

SCOOPS: The Wilshire Center ice-creamery has made headlines for its election-themed flavor contest over the last few weeks (voters can sample the sweet winners now). We're partial to the brown bread ice cream, which sounds pretty autumnal (and is). Maybe it is the perfect combo of summer/fall, which is the strange, hybrid-y place we find ourselves in now.

Trashy Lingerie: You threw out your ratty, seen-too-much-salt-water bathing suit last month? Count on this La Cienega skimpwear haven to carry bikini-like treasures every month of the year. Bonus: you can pick up a naughty, eye-popping Halloween costume at the same time.

Paradise Cove Beach Cafe: Sip a guava margarita or peach mojito while digging your toes in the sand. Crashing waves, classic diner fare, and loads of beachy people watching.

We're also thinking something resort-y and posh is in order. Just us, a pebble-bottom pool, and a pink noodle we can float on all day long. Summer, we miss you already.
