Surfin' Santa Visits Seaport Village

He's more into board shorts than the classic red suit.

WHAT SORT OF CONVEYANCE... Kris Kringle employs to travel about around the holidays is kind of dependent upon his destination. For sure, we all know that he uses his jolly red sleigh a lot, because it has a lot of room for the bags of toys and it gives the reindeer a chance to stretch a leg (if one can be said to "stretch a leg" by circumnavigating the globe). But when it is not Christmas Eve, and Santa Claus is simply out visiting fans and seeing who has been naughty and nice in various locations, well, he often leaves the big sleigh at homes and tailors his travel to where he's headed. If he's headed to Tomales Bay, near Point Reyes National Seashore, well, he arrives by boat, and if he is going to Seaport Village in San Diego, well, really, only a seaplane will do. And lookie here: Santa'll be back at the Pacific-snug attraction on Saturday, Nov. 28, chatting with people and posing in his classic Hawaiian shirt and board shorts and, yes, his surfboard, too.

THERE'S A PARADE, too, at 1 o'clock that day, down the boardwalk, and live entertainment and kid-nice craft tables and such. Nearby there are shops and eateries, a few dozen, in case you want to get the whole shopping-for-the-season thing going (Nov. 28 is also Small Business Saturday, in case you're planning on lending some support to a local store or two). And as for the sweet take-home part of the day? The Birch Aquarium at Scripps will be on hand to help children make eco-cute ornaments that can hang on the fir back at home.

WILL SANTA CLAUS, when he visits on Christmas Eve, see the ornament your kid made at Seaport Village, and remember the classic California day in November he spent there, meeting his fans? He might, but he's pretty busy on that night, and doesn't linger anywhere too long (except to consume a few cookies now and then). Though he does have his sleigh with him on Christmas Eve, and his reindeer, so he'll get the job done. As for his surfing side? We like to believe he's back on the waves to relax once Christmas has wrapped, practicing his skills for his next appearance at Seaport Village. It is an annual thing, after all, with 2015 being the tenth year Surfin' Santa has paid a ho-ho-ho-packed visit.
