If you're looking for a deeper understanding of what it means to be a celebrity, a group of local high school students has a performance for you.
The Beatnix -- a group of poets, lyricists and writers from Fairfax High School -- will be performing every Wednesday in April at the Farmers Market. The free show mixes music, movement and poetry to explore the concept of fame, says the show's director HeavenNezCree.
"A group of students, hanging out at the market for food and fun, encounter an infamous 'teen celebrity' and turn the sighting into sharp observations about fame and its role in our lives. The students have fashioned an observant and entertaining program of their own words and thoughts -- it's a very impressive performance," says HeavenNezCree.
The director says she was impressed by how much the students were willing to share, and the way they attacked the material. The group has been prepping for the show since October, and for many of the students, this will be their first public performance of this size.
"The kids have worked hard to communicate their ideas in a variety of forms which celebrate language and they've found a very imaginative way to fold those ideas into a cohesive performance piece," says show producer Dennis Howard.
The one-hour show begins at 6 p.m. at the market's West Patio stage on April 6, 13, 20 and 27.
