The Marvels of Matzah

Jar creates several savory versions of the Passover classic.

Matzah brei is a meaningful and tasty dish that, for many people, has strong ties to home and how their own families have traditionally interpreted the ingredients. Should it be barely fried or have some crunch? Should it have the texture of an omelet, and what of toppings?

As Passover approaches home cooks are turning to their cupboards and phoning friends and relatives to come over and enjoy. If you love this dish so, there are other interesting twists and variations that restaurants around town will be serving up.

JAR: The elegant Beverly eatery will kick off 7 Days of Matzo Brei on Saturday, April 7. While a traditional version of the dish will be served nightly, the chefs will be trying out eclectic toppings and sauces. The pencil asparagus, burrata, and browned butter does tempt.

MAGNOLIA BAKERY: The Third Street cupcakery is offering a Matzo Crunch for Passover. They had us at buttercrunch and toffee. Oh, and chocolate and white chocolate, too.

AKASHA: We've also heard amazing things about this Culver City spot's take on the dish, which they serve with Akasha Jam. The entire Passover brunch, which will be served on Sunday, April 8 (and has traditional Easter selections, too) looks amazing; dishes catching our eye include a Niman Ranch Pastrami Reuben and Matzo bagels. Matzo bagels! We'll see you there.
