“The Producers” at Hollywood Bowl

It's the starry three-nighter of the landmark's summer season.

While devoted fans of the Hollywood Bowl typically have that singular summer event they look forward to above all other shows -- the movie sing-along, the Fourth of July fireworks, the classical offerings -- there are many who wait to see what the weekend-long musical offering will be come late July or early August.

A couple of years ago it was "Rent," directed by Neil Patrick Harris (who, you'll recall, once starred in the accoladed show, back in NY). Last year it was "Hairspray," with Tony winners Marissa Jaret Winokur and Harvey Fierstein in the leads.

And this year? It's "The Producers," with the perfectly cast Richard Kind and Jesse Tyler Ferguson taking on Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom. And, as in past years, stars round out the rest of the cast, too; the roster is impressive, complete with Rebecca Romijn as Ulla. Oh, and look for comedian Dane Cook under the big shell, too.

The performances run from Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29.

Mel Brooks, of course, is the merry and mischievous mind behind the most famous flop-glorifying story ever told (and props to Thomas Meehan, as well). Has the mad pursuit of creating an on-stage stinker ever received the sheer love it did in either the 1968 film or the later, award-winning Broadway show? Nope.

Perhaps one of our favorite things about the Hollywood Bowl's annual musical is that it is so brief. While some stage shows will run for months or even years, this one is bowing just after it has begun. There's a catch-it-now feel, which, perhaps, makes it feel special. Like summer itself, it is over before you know it.
