Three Times the Fab Four

You can get your Beatles fix in three offbeat ways.

Most SoCal-based Beatles devotees would argue that, in a city as large and as musically inclined as Los Angeles, one can generally find something Beatles-y to enjoy on any given weekend.

True. But the weekend of Aug. 21-22 is offering three distinct and rather offbeat Fab Four pleasures. All you need is love for the first one (read: no admission), but the second two are great bargains, too...

"The Beatles LOVE" at the Grove: The Cirque du Soleil performers will be at the alfresco shopping center on Sunday, Aug. 22, along with cast members from several other of the Vegas Cirque spectaculars. You'll want to arrive early for this free event; things get going at 11-ish, with performances starting at 1 p.m.

Sawdust Art Festival: Saturday, Aug. 21 is Beatles Day at the Laguna Beach art extravaganza. There will be live Fab Four-ish tunes, and "60's era art and crafts projects." We want to learn to make one of those Magical Mystery Tour-type smocks. Possible, Sawdust?

"Lisztomania": We raved about director Ken Russell visiting the Egyptian to talk about The Who's "Tommy." His film "Lisztomania" is also showing on the same night -- that would be Saturday, Aug. 21 -- and the LA Times points out that it features Ringo Starr as the Pope. Ringo!
