67 YEARS OF GREAT ART: If you're a gallery regular, you know the challenges and hurdles that are inherent in staging an annual show, each and every year. If you keep going for a decade, bravo. Two decades? Amazing. But hitting year 67 is indeed a major achievement. So we pause to spotlight the opening of The 67th Scripps College Ceramic Annual, which kicks off in Claremont on Saturday, Jan. 22.
MÜLLER, TANG, GRIMM: Several major names in contemporary ceramics will be on the cards next to works; we're especially taken with the pachydermy, tomato-terrific "Majestic Diptych" by Thomas Müller. "Making Fun" is this year's theme -- the elephants atop red, round fruit "balls" definitely add to that -- and the show will run through April 3. Two more fun facts: Tommy's, as in Tommy's Hamburgers, is a sponsor, which ups the fun-o-sity of the show for us. And two: The 67th Scripps College Ceramic Annual is billed as "the longest-running exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the United States." So, in other words, you can definitely mark you 2012 calendar for the 68th outing.
