Woman Burned as Chemicals “Flash” in UCLA Classroom

LOS ANGELES -- A fire Monday on the fourth floor of the Molecular Sciences Building on the UCLA campus left a 22-year-old woman with second- and third-degree burns over 40 percent of her body, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 2:57 p.m. and was quickly extinguished, according to Melissa Kelley of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who said it occurred in a classroom when the chemicals in a flask "flashed."

Kelly said a hazardous materials team was called to seal the room and contain any dangerous chemicals. And an arson team was also summoned because an injury occurred on public property, she said.

It was not immediately clear if the unidentified victim, who was taken to nearby UCLA Medical Center, was a student, she said.
