Ventura's Seaside Highland Games

HARD TO CHOOSE: Have you been to an authentic Highland Games? Then you know what we're talking about when we say it can be hard to choose where to land first. Oh, if there's a strict schedule on, where one happening follows the next, that is handy; it helps us regulate our day. But if there are multiple events at once? The tossing of cabers and throwing of hammers at the very same time that the bagpipers march? Hoo boy. We can't ever decide. But, in the end, we do like a packed, busy-busy games, which is exactly what Ventura's Seaside Highland Games happens to be. Busy-busy, and spread over three days: Friday, Oct. 7 through Sunday, Oct. 9.

TARTAN TO-DOS: Let's pause before launching into the list of what's going on to note this annual event's spectacular, ocean-breezy location. Yep, it's at the Seaside Park, meaning the air is pretty sweet. We're not sure that it exactly matches a moor for sensory feeling, but it does summon a touch of Scotland. Now. Are you ready for bagpipes and dancing and cabers and darts and cars and the Children's Glen? How about the Fiddle Competition? Or browsing the Mercantile? See, we're having that issue again. That want-it-all-at-once issue. It's not a bad issue to have, all told. An adult single-day ticket is $14.
