Vintage Mourning Tours

The historic collection of 110-close homes honor the season.

Heritage Square, that Victorian-packed park just off the 110, is going to celebrate October, like many attractions and landmarks are doing around town.

But it wouldn't do to see big lights and sparkly outfits at the eaves-and-turrets-laden spot. Rather, Heritage Square marks the season in its own way, with an eerie and elegant quiet.

It's the eighth year for the park's annual Mourning Tours, which lead visitors on a trip back into the funereal traditions of the 19th century. Costumed people will also talk about spiritualism practices, which reached a particularly fevered heyday during the era in which the Heritage Square homes were built. You can also learn about the customs and costumes of Victorian mourning during the day. Oh, and word has it a fortune teller will be on the grounds.

The dates are Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30; Adult admission is $10.

One note: Sunday will be the better day to arrive with wee ones, says Heritage Square.
