Weekend: Boats, “KOOZA” Wraps, “Messiah”

Water, wonder, and coming together in song.

NEWPORT BEACH CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE: We talked about this the other day. And we'll talk about it again. Because 1) the parade is now 101 years old. 2) A million people show up to see it. And 3) the photos coming in are beyond in the whole over-the-top department. So many lights. Evenings through Sunday, December 20th.

"KOOZA" CARTWHEELS AWAY: It got extended. And then extended again. Now it is taking its final bow, the last flourish, on the beach in Santa Monica. But be not sad, Cirque du Soleil-ers: "KOOZA" opens in Irvine in January. Are we totally confident that people who saw it up here will see it again in Orange County? Pretty totally. Last LA day is Sunday, December 20th.

"MESSIAH" SINGALONG: You, singing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, in Walt Disney Concert Hall, to an uplifting piece of music that has the sound of the ages. Do we need to write more? Only that it happens on Sunday, December 20th.

OZOMATLI: The LA outfit is singing at Club Nokia on the night of Saturday, December 19th, but they've got a date earlier in the day at the GRAMMY Museum. The vibe? Music for the kidly set. We like bands that put on special kid shows. And we like Ozomatli. A great coming-together. Noon, Saturday, December 19th. (We should also mention Ozomatli will be at Club Nokia on Friday the 18th, too.)

ALSO ON STAGE: Nokia Theatre's first honoree -- that would be George Lopez -- starts a several-night run on Friday, December 18th; Holiday Swing with Barbara Morrison is at the Warner Grand in San Pedro on Saturday, December 19th; and KROQ presents X at the Wiltern on Saturday, December 19th. The really, really good band Calexico joins.
