Weekend: Champagne & Accordions

Raise a glass of bubbly to wheezing bellows.

ACCORDIONS & CHAMPAGNE: Pasadena's Pop Champagne is being sung about in the latest Sunset; cheers to that. If you haven't been, the Haberdashery Ensemble is stopping by on Sunday, February 28th, to serenade sippers. We think it is a good way to send the month off both musically and beveragely.

ANGELIQUE KIDJO: Oh, decisions, decisions. On the very same night, downtown, at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the great songstress will be performing. She's got a new album called "Oyo" -- it just debuted a couple of weeks back -- and a voice to match that magnificent space.

KINKY: This is the band. You know the band. One of their tunes comes on a restaurant sound system, and you stop your server to ask the name of the group. They hail from Monterrey, Mexico, the experimental flows are made for moving, and they'll be at the Luckman on Saturday, February 27th.

ETHAN BORTNICK: He hasn't hit a decade-old yet, but this young performer can be safely called a sensation. He plays piano, he sings, he's been on Oprah, every major network, every major everywhere, wowing all the way. He's at El Rey on Sunday, February 28th.

FILMWEEK OSCAR PREVIEW: For cinephiles, the weekend before the Oscars is typically a time for catching up on those last-minute haven't-seens, and for going to things like this. Several big-name critics are gathering at the Egyptian on Sunday afternoon, February 28th, to talk everything Academy. We definitely want to do this, so we're informed going in to next weekend.
