Weekend: Daytime Emmys, Beer Fest…

DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS: They're at the almost-too-beautiful Orpheum Theatre. They're Sunday, August 30th. If you *just* missed that nomination this year, best stay home and watch with other daytime drama/talk fans. Vanessa Williams is hosting. We love this: "Sesame Street," now 40, is getting a special award. (Oscar getting an Emmy? Not grouchy at all.) If you don't have an invite, the awards air on the CW.

OC BEER FESTIVAL: Dozens and dozens (meaning over 60 or so) of brews are sudsing up Irvine Lake, and we're not talking about *in* the lake. Which will be your favorite? The Hobgoblin dark ale tempts, if only because the label is so goblin-riffic. It's happening Sunday, August 30th, from 2-5PM. Bring a pal who can drive ya home (there's a special designated driver rate). Buy 'em dinner as thanks. Because no one doesn't like a thank-you meal.

TWO MORE DRIVES: And two major events closing, in two opposite directions. The family-nice Antelope Valley Fair & Alfalfa Festival closes the rides and stows the fried foods on August 30th, as does the Sawdust Art Festival, Laguna's historic paintings-and-everything-else arts fair. Could you do both in one day? Probably not, but seeing both in a weekend is a possibility.

THEATRE TICKETS: Tim Robbins hosts the Sunday, August 30th afternoon gala for "The Trial for the Catonsville 9," which runs this weekend only, for four performances only, at The Actors' Gang (it'll head out onto the road next); "The Conversation" and other short plays take the stage at The Black Box Theatre on Sunday, August 30th. And "Legally Blonde" has a week to go at Pantages (closing September 6th).

"HALLOWEEN II" LIVE AUCTION: The Rob Zombie horror flick opens on Friday, August 28th; if you're seeing it opening weekend, and you're all about the Michael Myers mythology, best make for El Segundo, where a live auction is going down on Saturday, August 29th. Will the iconic mask be up for grabs? And if you get it, where will you display? Best decide before you go.
