Weekend: LA County Fair Opens

Pomona's biggest party turns on the lights for the next four, fun weeks.

LA COUNTY FAIR: Hyperbole and exclamation points totally fit our annual Pomona party. It's said to be the largest county fair in the country, it has been around for 90 years, it attracts some of the biggest names in entertainment, and its one-of-a-kind foods make headlines (look for deep-fried cookie dough this year). The only question is how to break it down in bite-sized pieces; it's a delicious task, anyway. Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 30, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

FIESTA HERMOSA: It's the big, arts-and-crafts-filled, beach-close festival that's known for two things: It's free, so that's nifty, and it bookends either end of the traditional summer season (yep, there's always one on Memorial Day Weekend, too). We've reached the second bookend but the weather is fine -- more than the first part of summer, even, if we recall -- and people'll be out in beachwear, eating icy treats, listening to tunes, and enjoying La Vida Hermosa Beach. Sept. 1-3

FYF FESTIVAL: Picture two days -- Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2 -- with nearly a full day of music between them. The shows at this outdoor music festival start at 12:30 p.m. both days and end at midnight, meaning if you turn up for both the Saturday and Sunday shows, you've done nearly a whole day. Place is LA State Historic Park; Refused, M83, Beirut, and The Faint lead the weekend.

ORANGE INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR: Booths serving casual eats from around the world take over the better part of Old Towne Orange from Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 2 (note that Monday is not included). How to decide what to try? The foods are divided into sections or streets. Start in Greece and wend your way over to Mexico, then back. The beloved food fair marks its 40th this year.

LONG BEACH x 3: Lots of interesting things in the LBC, like every weekend, but here are three catching the eye: SoundWalk in the East Village Arts District on Saturday, Sept. 1; the Art Deco Fest is on the Queen Mary, complete with vintage pajama party (the fest is Aug. 31 through Sept. 2); and the Long Beach Greek Festival, complete with carnival, dances from Sept. 1 through 3.
